Partnerships

The Riverside Virtual School (RVS) is a fully-accredited, tuition-free, public high school within the Riverside Unified School District, which offers high-quality, interactive online classes for students in Southern California. Part of our vision includes developing partnerships between the Riverside Unified School District and other districts throughout California in order to expand access to high-quality online courses for students in rural schools of the State. Innovative leadership and planning will allow school districts to offer increased access to Advanced Placement courses, provide opportunities for credit recovery and acceleration, and ensure greater equity of educational opportunity. The RVS is accredited through the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

Key Objectives:

In order to ensure the quality of curriculum and instruction and address the needs of all students, each online course is rigorous in nature, aligned to state and district content standards, and designed to meet specific student needs and instructional objectives.

In order to leverage program resources/costs and ensure the needs of all the constituencies are met, each online course will be offered and coordinated through a centralized Learning Management System (LMS) and designed to support general education, Advanced Placement, credit recovery, and course acceleration initiatives.

In order to sustain growth and attract currently non-enrolled students, RVS welcomes home-schooled students from within the five county Southern California area, offering courses that meet the learning objectives identified by the State Board of Education in California public schools. Active partnerships with districts throughout the State, could facilitate their ability to do the same within their attendance boundaries.

Hosted Model

Goal: To provide increased access to high-demand courses at a local school campus.

Structure: Schools provide staffing and up to 36 students for the class. A locally funded, NCLB compliant teacher assumes the course and oversees student work as a part of their contracted workday. A minimum of three face-to face meetings are scheduled and supervised by the host school site; although the actual number of face-to-face meetings is determined locally. The site maintains responsibility for tracking and reporting attendance and grades for students.

Distributed Model

Goal: To provide access to difficult-to-fill courses across a district and increase the number of A-G courses offered during and beyond the school day.

Structure: A course is “sponsored” by a district that provides an NCLB compliant teacher who oversees student work as a part of their contracted work day. The teacher tracks attendance for all students and reports weekly to RVS. RVS communicates attendance and grade information with the home school for official recording. Each school must identify a local mentor to oversee face-to-face meetings and proctor exams.

Centralized Model

Goal: To provide online access to A–G courses for non-traditional students (home school, home-hospital, county court school, out of district) and or extend course opportunities to students enrolled in rural school districts with limited staffing.

Structure: Courses are offered via RVS and staffed by NCLB compliant RVS teachers. Students from any RUSD school may enroll in RVS through the counselor at their home campus, once a partnership agreement has been entered into between RUSD and the participating school district. An RVS teacher will track and report attendance and grades for all students. RVS will report attendance and grading to the home school for recording. Schools must provide a local mentor to oversee face-to-face meetings and proctor exams.

Additional Options

RVS works with districts and school sites to develop additional ways for students to access digital learning resources, including from within traditional brick-and-mortar classrooms and as extended-day learning opportunities..

Tutorial services are provided for students enrolled in Centralized courses and are available for access by students enrolled in Hosted and Distributed courses

Curriculum alignment services provide a means for school districts to develop online courses that mirror their face-to-face classrooms and incorporate board adopted materials.
